Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber knocked out eighth seed Lucas Pouille in the first round of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.
The 33-year-old took the first set 7-5 and then comfortably swept aside his French opponent, 11 years his junior, 6-2 in the second.
Gilles Simon won the all-French battle against Nicolas Mahut but had to work hard as he recovered from losing the first set 6-3.
Simon struggled with his first serve all morning - his success rate was just 36 per cent in the opening set - but it gradually improved and he won the next two sets 6-3 6-4.
Luxembourg's Gilles Muller had an easier ride against wildcard Tallon Griekspoor, winning 6-3 6-2.
