Britain's Kyle Edmund booked his place in the quarter-finals of the European Open with an eye-catching three-set victory over second seed David Ferrer in Antwerp.

The 21-year-old, who has risen steadily up the rankings in recent weeks on the back of some notable victories, came through 6-1 3-6 7-6 against the wily Spanish veteran to set up a last-eight date with Andreas Seppi on Friday.

The British No 2 was quick out of the blocks, winning the opening five games on his way to taking the first set in 25 minutes.

He could not maintain the momentum, however, his failure to capitalise on three break points in the sixth game of the second set proving pivotal as world No 15 Ferrer levelled matters.

Edmund again looked like he might falter when he squandered two match points on Ferrer's serve in the decisive set but he held his nerve to prevail in the subsequent tie-break.
